BURNOPFIELD, with the hamlets of LINTZ GREEN and CROOK GATE, was formed into an ecclesiastical parish in 1872 out of the parochial chapelry of Tanfield, civil parish of Chester-le-Street. Burnopfield is 7 miles south-west from Newcastle, in the Northern division of the county, middle division of Chester ward, Lanchester union, Shotley Bridge county court district, rural deanery of Chester, archdeaconry and diocese of Durham ; it is situated on the road from Shotley Bridge to Newcastle and Gateshead, and on the banks of the river Derwent. At Lintz Green, 2 miles west, is a station on the North Eastern railway. The church of St. James is of stone, in the Early English style, situated near Lintz Green, erected in 1872 : it consists of chancel, nave and south aisle, with bell cot and 1 bell : there are sittings for about 180 persons. The register dates from the year 1873. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £200, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham and held by the Rev. Thomas Stirrup, of St. Bees. There are chapels for Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists at Burnopfield. Here are two United Methodist chapels, one of which was erected in 1870. A Temperance Hall was erected at Leazes in 1872. A large paper mill at Lintz Ford is the property of Messrs. John Annandale and Sons. The chief landowners are the trustees of the late R. S. Surtees, esq. and Messrs. Laycock and Annandale. The soil is clay ; the subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats, and there is much pasture land.
