CASTLE EDEN is a township and parish 10 miles east from Durham by road, 14 south from Sunderland, and 7 north-west from Hartlepool by railway : it is in the Northern division of the county, in the southern division of Easington ward, union of Easington, county court district of Hartlepool, southern division of Easington rural deanery, Durham archdeaconry and diocese and York province. The Sunderland and Hartlepool, and Ferry Hill and Hartlepool railways pass through this township, and have a station on a branch of the North Eastern railway ; a branch line will shortly be opened from Castle Eden to Stockton. The township is situated 2 1/2 miles from the sea, and on the main road from Sunderland to Stockton ; it is very scattered, there being several small collections of houses ; the principal are CASTLE EDEN, FACTORY, FOUNDRY, and WELLFIELD ; Factory is about a mile west from the church and was so called from an extensive linen factory once situated there. Petty sessions are held here fortnightly for the south division of Easington ward. The chief station for the county police for the above ward is also situated here ; it contains justice room, dwelling for the superintendent, and cells for prisoners. There is an annual agricultural and horticultural show. The church of St. James is a stone building with spire, erected in 1764 by Rowland Burdon, esq. : it will seat 500 persons ; it has been enlarged and otherwise improved at various periods, and consists of chancel, nave and aisles, and contains two monuments, one to Rowland Burdon, esq. several years M.P. for the county of Durham, and the designer and builder of Sunderland bridge crossing the Wear ; the other to John Maclean, esq. The register dates for baptisms from 1720 ; burials, 1728 ; marriages, 1813. The living is a rectory, yearly value £242 with residence, in the gift of the Rev. John Burdon, J.P. and held by the Rev. Charles Robinson Bird, M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford : the rectory house, given by R. Burdon, esq. to the benefice, is covered with ivy and situated three-quarters of a mile south-west from the church. There are two National schools, one for boys and one for girls, chiefly supported by the Rev. John Burdon and Mrs. Burdon. There is an extensive colliery situated just within this parish, the property of the Castle Eden Coal Company, affording employment to a considerable number of persons ; the principal part of the works and the habitations of the miners are in the adjoining parish of Monk Hesleden. Here are an extensive brewery and maltings, brick and tile works, small steam corn mill, small ropery, and a good inn at the railway station. Castle Eden Castle, the seat of the Rev. John Burdon, J.P. is a castellated mansion, pleasantly situated in a spacious and well-wooded park at the head of a deep ravine : it is a square stone building : the interior is elegant, and contains a fine collection of paintings : a conservatory was added on the west side of the castle by the late Rowland Burdon, esq. in 1874. Castle Eden Dene is a picturesque spot, and is much frequented during the summer: great improvements have recently been made by the present owner ; a tubular bridge has been erected across the gunner’s pool, walks laid out, and several rustic bridges erected. The Rev. John Burdon, J.P. is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is sand and loamy ; the subsoil is clay and magnesian limestone. The crops are wheat, oats, barley, beans, turnips and potatoes. The township contains 1,935 acres of land ; the assessed area is 1,503 acres ; rateable value, £7,032. The population in 1871 was 693.
Parish Clerk and Sexton, James Allen.
