COXHOE with the hamlet of EAST HETTON form a township in the civil parish of Kelloe, and were constituted an ecclesiastical parish in 1866, from the parishes of Bishop Middleham and Kelloe: the village of Coxhoe is situated 5 miles south-south-east from Durham, on the high road from the latter place to Sedgefield; it is nearly 1 mile in length, and contains some good inns and shops: the houses on the western side of the street or village are in Bishop Middleham parish; it is in the Northern division of the county, the south division of Easington ward, union and county court district of Durham, rural deanery of South Easington, archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. The Ferry Hill and Hartlepool branch of the North Eastern railway has a station here. The church of St. Mary, consecrated in 1866, is a stone building in the Early Decorated style, consisting of chancel and nave. The register dates from the year 1868. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the Crown and the Bishop alternately, and held by the Rev. David Fleming, B.A., F.R.A.S. of Glasgow University. The Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists have each a chapel here. There are National and British schools, and one in connection with the Primitive Methodist chapel. There are extensive collieries in the neighbourhood, coke ovens and stone quarries, which give employment to the inhabitants; also lime works, brown pottery ware and pipe making is carried on. Coxhoe Hall, now unoccupied, occupies an elevated position, half a mile east from the village. Thomas Wood, esq. and the trustees of the late Mrs. Jones are the principal landowners; R. Blanshard, esq. is lord of the manor. The soil is loam and clay; the subsoil, limestone. The area of Coxhoe is 1,104 acres; rateable value, £5,768; and the population in 1871 was, 3,749 in the township and 3,059 in the parish
EAST HETTON, an important colliery village in this township, but in the ecclesiastical parish of Kelloe, is about 1 mile east from Coxhoe. There is a Wesleyan chapel
