The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, in the gift of and held by the Rev. Henry Linthwaite, M.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge. There is a chapel for Wesleyans, and a colliery in this township. Several altar inscriptions have been found, some of which are preserved in the cathedral of Durham. There are still some remains of the old city walls ; Vindomora was the name of the Roman station in this parish. "St Ebba, daughter of Ethelfred, king of Northumberland, afterwards Abbess of Coldingham, built here, upon the banks of the Derwent, a monastery, before the year of Christ 660, which was afterwards destroyed by the Danes."
