EIGHTON BANKS is a village and ecclesiastical parish formed in 1863 from the mother parishes of Chester-le-Street and Gateshead, in the Northern division of the county, Chester-le-Street union, Gateshead county court district, Chester rural deanery and Durham archdeaconry and diocese. Eighton Banks is 1 1/2 miles from Lamesley station and 4 south-east from Gateshead. The church of St. Thomas was erected in 1853 by public subscription, the site of which was given by Thomas Davison, esq. of Durham : it can seat 360 persons, has chancel and nave and turret containing 1 bell : the style is Early English : the chancel windows are stained : it contains an organ. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham, and held by the Rev. Samuel Atkinson, of Queen's College, Galway. Here is a mixed National school. The principal landowners are the Earl of Ravensworth and John Milnes Favell, esq. The area is 2,000 acres ; the population in 1871 was 2,382.—Letters arrive via Gateshead.
