ELDON is an ecclesiastical parish, formed out of the parishes of St. Andrew's Auckland and Old Shildon, is 2 miles north-east of Old Shildon, 2 east of St. Andrew's and 3 south-east of Bishop Auckland, in the union and county court district of Bishop Auckland, and south-eastern division of Darlington ward, rural

deanery of the Southern division of Darlington, archdeaconry of Durham and diocese of Durham : the nearest railway station is at New Shildon. The church of St. Mark (at present incomplete) is a stone structure, in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave and transepts, and 1 bell. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, in the gift of the Crown and Bishop of Durham alternately, and held by the Rev. William Noble, Licentiate in Theology of Durham University. There is a mixed National school, with residence for master. The Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists have places of worship here. The South Durham collieries are situated here. The Earl of Eldon is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Mrs. Spencer, the Earl of Eldon and Harry Smithson, esq. The parish abounds with coal. The area is 850 acres ; rateable value, £8,856 ; population, 4,000.
