ELTON is a township, small village and parish, 3 miles south-west from Stockton-on-Tees, 8 west from Darlington and 4 north from Yarm, situated on the road between Stockton and Darlington, in the Southern division of the county, south-west division of Stockton ward, Stockton union and county court district, rural deanery of Stockton and archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. The church (name unknown) is a Gothic stone building, and consists of a chancel, nave and south porch, with a bell-turret at the western gable : the chancel is separated from the nave by a Norman arch : the eastern windows are stained, one containing representations of the Resurrection and Ascension, erected to the memory of G. W. Sutton, esq. by his widow, and another given by J. Hogg, esq. of the Jefferson family ; also one to the memory of the late rector, the Rev. James Milner, M.A. The register dates from the year 1573. The living is a discharged rectory, yearly value £170, with a glebe of about 75 acres, in the alternate gift of the Rev. J. Curteis, rector of Shelton, Norfolk, and the trustees of the late John Hogg, esq. and held by the Rev. Charles Marriott, B.A. of Queen's College, Oxford. A handsome rectory house was built by the late rector, the Rev. James Milner, M.A. aided by a grant of £400 from the Maltby fund. Elton Hall, with a beautiful plantation and grounds, is the seat of John S. Sutton, esq. J.P. who is lord of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is clay ; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat and oats. The area is 1,419 acres ; rateable value, £1,227 ; and the population in 1871 was 90.—Letters are delivered by messenger from Stockton, which is the nearest money order office.
