ELWICK HALL is a long straggling parish, without any village, 14 1/2 miles south-east from Ferry Hill (by railway), 9 north-by-east from Stockton and 7 west of Hartlepool, in the Southern division of the county, north-eastern division of Stockton ward, union and county court district of Hartlepool, rural deanery of Stockton, archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. St. Peter's church, situated close to the village of Elwick, is an ancient structure, but has undergone several alterations ; it consists of chancel and nave and a low square tower on the south side, containing 2 bells. The register dates from the year 1593. The living is a rectory, yearly value £400 net, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Manchester, and held by the Rev. James Alfred Boddy, M.A. of St. John's College, Cambridge. Elwick Hall, the rectory house, is situated near the church, from which it is separated by a small beck. The parish school was erected in 1851 by subscription, and has an average attendance of from 40 to 50 children. The Marquis of Londonderry, who is lord of the manor, C. S. D. Thelluson, R. Ormston, esqs. Rev. A. White and the trustees of R. Robson, esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is clay ; subsoil, loam and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats, clover and peas. The acreage is 4,321A. 3R. 18P. ; rateable value, £3,350. The population in 1871 was 200.
