EVENWOOD is a parish and township in Bishop Auckland union and county court district and ward of Darlington, rural deanery of the northern division of Darlington, archdeaconry and diocese of Durham, has a station on the branch line of Bishop Auckland and Barnard Castle of the North Eastern railway, and is situated on the summit of a steep bank which rises on the south side of the river Gaunless, 5 miles south-west of Bishop Auckland, 9 1/2 miles from Barnard Castle and 249 miles from London. The church of St. Paul, erected in the year 1867, at a cost of £2,780, is a stone building, in the Early English style, has chancel, nave and 2 bells, and will seat 350 persons. The register dates from the year 1863. The living is a vicarage, in the gift of the Crown and Bishop of Durham alternately, yearly value £300, with residence, and held by the Rev. William Scragg. There are places of worship for the Congregationalists, Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists. Here are collieries, which are the chief support of the inhabitants. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who are lords of the manor, and J. Bowes, esq. are the principal landowners. The area is 5,259 acres ; rateable value, with barony, £16,923 ; and the population in 1871 was 3,060.

TOFT HILL is in this township, 2 miles south-west, where there is a place of worship for the Primitive Methodists.
