FERRY HILL is a township, village and ecclesiastical district, formed in 1843 from the parish of Merrington, 5 1/2 miles west from Sedgefield, 6 south-east from Durham, 7 west from Bishop Auckland and 254 from London, in the South division of the county, south-eastern division of Darlington ward, Sedgefield union, Bishop Auckland county court district, rural deanery of Darlington (northern division), officialty of the dean and chapter of Durham, and diocese of Durham. Ferry Hill Station, about a mile from the village, is on the main line of the North Eastern Railway Company, and there is a junction to Hartlepool, Stockton and Durham. The church of St. Luke, erected in 1853 and restored in 1866 at a cost of £163, is a fine stone structure in the Early English style, consisting of chancel and nave, with turret containing 2 bells : there are sittings for 368 persons. Henry Frederick Long, M.A. of University College, Durham. The vicarage, situated south of the church, is in the Elizabethan style. A School Board was formed in 1876 for the united parishes of Merrington, Spennymoor, Ferry Hill, Tudhoe and Whitworth. There is a National school, built on a site given by the Dean & Chapter of Durham, with house and garden attached for the master ; the school was enlarged in 1871 at a cost of £577. The Primitive Methodists have a place of worship here and also at Low Spennymoor. The mines and minerals mostly belong to the Earl of Eldon and Dean and Chapter of Durham, who, with M. C.
