FRAMWELLGATE is a township in St. Oswald civil parish, constituted an ecclesiastical parish in 1858, from the mother parish of St. Oswald, Durham, in the Northern division of the county, union and county court district of Durham, rural deanery of Chester, archdeaconry and diocese of Durham, extending about 2 miles north from the boundary of the city of Durham. The church of St. Cuthbert, situated a short distance beyond the city boundary, is a handsome stone building in the Early English style, and consists of chancel, nave, south aisle and tower. The register dates from the year 1858. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter, and held by the Rev. Henry Richard Ridley, M.A., of University College, Oxford, who is also surrogate.

There is a small chapel of ease at Framwellgate Moor, where the Wesleyan Methodists and the New Connexion Methodists have each a chapel. In 1877 Board schools were opened, and will hold 420 children.

Aykley Heads, the seat of F. D. Johnson, esq. D.L. and J.P. is an ancient mansion on the North road, about 1 mile from Durham : it is of great antiquity, being mentioned in documents of the twelfth century as the residence of Gilbert del Aikes : it is celebrated for its spacious terrace and beautiful view of the cathedral, castle and the country extending to the Cleveland hills, in Yorkshire : it has been the property of its present occupier and his ancestors for many years.

Situated on the bank of the river Wear, in this township, are the interesting remains of Finchale priory. St. Godric, about the year 1104, erected a hermitage and chapel, where he remained upwards of 60 years : Bishop Pudsey granted a charter for a cell at Finchale, and his son Henry, in the year 1196, founded a priory for Benedictines, subordinate to the convent at Durham : at the Dissolution the yearly revenues were valued at £122 15s. 3d. There is a colliery at Framwellgate Moor, and Frankland ; Viscount Boyne is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Rev. Robert Williamson, Francis D. Johnson, and John Fawcett, esq. The soil is mostly light ; subsoil, sand and clay ; the chief crops are barley, potatoes and turnips. The area of the township is 3,682 acres ; rateable value, £23,804 ; and the population in 1871 was 4,548 ; the area of the ecclesiastical parish is 3,467 acres ; the population in 1871 was 3,613.
