HEIGHINGTON is a parish, township, and village, 247 miles from London, 6 north-west from Darlington, about the same distance from Bishop Auckland, and $1\frac{1}{2}$ from the station of the Darlington section of the North Eastern railway; it is in the Southern division of the county, south-eastern division of Darlington ward, union and county court district of Darlington, rural deanery of Darlington, archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. The village is very open, and pleasantly situated on a hill, commanding extensive and beautiful views of the surrounding country. The parish contains the townships of HEIGHINGTON, REDWORTH, SCHOOL AYCLIFFE, WALWORTH, and COATS-A-MOOR. The church of St. Michael is an ancient stone building in the Norman style; it has a square tower with 3 bells, chancel, nave, transept, porch, and an organ. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £336, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Durham, and held by the Rev. Charles Clinton Chevallier, M.A. of Bishop Hatfield’s Hall, Durham. The Wesleyans have a chapel here. The principal landowners are the Rev. W. Cumby, H. E. Surtees, esq. Mr. John Wilkinson, and Mr. Page Page. The soil is a heavy loam; subsoil, limestone. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley, peas and clover. The area of the township is 1,743 acres; rateable value, £4,577 10s.; the population in 1871 was 697.

Redworth is a township and small village in the parish of Heighington, about 1 mile west from the church, and about 5 miles south-south-east of Bishop Auckland. Here is a Wesleyan chapel erected in 1878. Here are the remains of the entrenchments of an encampment, situated on Shackerton Hill. Redworth Hall, an old Elizabethan stone mansion, beautifully situated in a park, in the township of Redworth, and having extensive views of the surrounding country, is about 1 mile from the village of Heighington and is the seat of Henry Edward Surtees, esq. J.P., D.L. The principal landowners are Henry Edward Surtees, esq. J.P. and Sir George Musgrave, bart. The area is 1,840 acres; rateable value, £6,587 10s.; the population in 1871 was 325.

School Aycliffe is a small township in the parish of Heighington, 1 mile north-east from the church, consisting of a few houses, with 27 inhabitants and 524 acres; rateable value, £2,697.

Walworth is a township in the parish of Heighington, 5 miles north-west of Darlington, and contains a few scattered houses, and is divided into two hamlets, called High and Low Walworth. The principal landowners are the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, and Pierce Aylmer, esq. Walworth Castle, the residence of Henry C. Smithson, esq. is situated in this township, and is the property of Pierce Aylmer, esq. The area is 2,132 acres; rateable value, £2,934 15s; the population in 1871 was 180.—Letters through Darlington, which is the nearest money order office.
