HEWORTH, comprising UPPER HEWORTH, HEWORTH SHORE and BILL QUAY, is an ecclesiastical parish, formed 1843, out of the parish of Jarrow, from which it is 3 miles south-west, three-quarters of a mile east from Felling, and half a mile west from Pelaw railway stations, 2 miles east from Gateshead and about 3 south-east from Newcastle, a polling place for the Northern division of the county, in the east division of Chester-le-Street ward, union and county court district of Gateshead, rural deanery of Chester, and archdeaconry and diocese of Durham: it is situated on the Darlington and Brandling Junction railway, which passes through the village on the south bank of the navigable river Tyne. The church of St. Mary is a handsome Gothic cruciform stone structure, erected in 1822 near the site of the old church: it has a chancel, nave and transepts, with an organ and square embattled tower containing 1 bell. The register dates from the year 1822. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £232, with residence, in the gift of Lady James and Mrs. Drewett, and held by the Rev. James Steel. Here is a National school for boys and girls, and a Sunday school held in the school-room. The Dean & Chapter of Durham are lords of the manor and chief landowners, but there are a few smaller owners. The soil is clay and loam; subsoil, various. The chief crops are corn and turnips; and the area, including Felling, is 2,853 acres; rateable value, £68,572; and the population in 1861 was 10,315, and in 1871, 13,755.

Upper Heworth is a village on an eminence, about three-quarters of a mile south from the church, and consists of scattered houses. Here are a colliery and several stone quarries.

Bill Quay and Heworth Shore, half a mile north from the church, is a populous neighbourhood, where there are several chemical and cement works, and shipbuilding is carried on. The Wesleyans have a chapel here.

Wardley is a small hamlet, one mile east from the church, where there is a colliery and a few scattered houses. The Bridlington junction with the Newcastle and Darlington lines has a station here, called the Pelaw Junction station.
