HUNWICK with part of the township of NEWTON CAP forms an ecclesiastical district taken out of the parish of St. Andrews Auckland in 1845, situated about $2\frac{1}{2}$ miles west-north-west from Bishop Auckland, in the Southern division of the county, north-west division of Darlington ward, Auckland union and county court district, rural deanery of the northern division of Darlington, archdeaconry and diocese of Durham: here is a station on the Bishop Auckland branch of the North Eastern railway. The church of St. Paul was erected in 1844, upon a site given by the late Mrs. Bell, and cost £700, and was enlarged in 1854; it consists of chancel, nave, and 1 bell; the stained window in the east end was given by Mrs. Spencer, of Yarm; there are also two memorial windows by Mrs. Spencer, and another to the three children of the Rev. J. E. Richards: there are sittings for 300 persons. The register dates from the year 1846. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Bishop Auckland, and held by the Rev. James Richards, M.A. of University College, Durham. Here are National schools and a master’s house, built on a site given by the late Matthew Bell, esq. The Wesleyans, Primitive Methodists, and Wesleyan New Connexion have places of worship here. There are several collieries and brickworks in the neighbourhood: also a stone quarry worked by the trustees of the late Patrick Campbell. The Rough Lea Sanitary Pipe works are situated here. Helmington Hall is a very handsome residence near this village, at present unoccupied. The principal landowners are Henry Bell, esq. of Woolsington, Northumberland, Mr. Greenwell, of Red Barns, the trustees of John Robson, esq. and trustees of Rev. George Fielding. The soil is clayey; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat and turnips, and grass. The area is 1,300 acres; rateable value, £12,639; and the population in 1871 was 1,558.
