IVESTONE is a village and township containing the hamlet of CROOK HALL, and the greater portion of the extensive village of LEADGATE; and was in 1863 formed into an ecclesiastical parish, from the parish of Lanchester, and includes part of the township of Greencroft and Medomsley, in the parish of Lanchester; Ivestone is 12 miles south-west from Gateshead and 12 north-west from Durham, in the Northern division of the county, west division of Chester ward, union of Lanchester, Shotley Bridge county court district, Chester rural deanery, archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. The church of St. Ives is a plain edifice of stone, situate at Redwell hills, erected in 1867, and consists of chancel, nave, and aisles, and will seat about 500 persons. The register dates from the year 1868. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, with residence, in the gift of the Crown and Bishop of Durham alternately, and held by the Rev. Joseph Whyte Mitchell, M.A. of King’s College, Aberdeen. There is a Catholic school for both sexes at High Brooms, and a school for boys and girls at Leadgate. There are chapels for Catholics, Wesleyans, and Primitive Methodists, the former at High Brooms, and the two latter at Leadgate. There are coal mines in this township, belonging to the proprietors of the Consett ironworks, and an iron and brass foundry belonging to the same company. Sir Henry A. Clavering, bart. of Axwell Hall, near Newcastle, Edward Taylor Smith, esq. who is lord of the manor, George Nicholson, esq. John Clavering, esq. and the Consett Iron Company are chief landowners. The soil is clay; the subsoil is clay and stone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, and pasture. The area of the township is 1,682 acres; rateable value, £9,582; the population in 1871 was 3,895. The area of the parish is 2,882 acres, and the population in 1871 was 3,890.
