MARLEY HILL is a parish formed in 1874 from the parishes of Whickham, Lamesley and Tanfield, 5 miles south-west from Gateshead, in the west division of Chester ward, Gateshead union and county court district, Chester rural deanery, Durham archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. The church of St. Cuthbert was erected in 1877 by voluntary subscription, at a cost of over £3,000: it is in the Early English Gothic style and consists of chancel, nave, porch, organ chamber and vestry. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, in the gift of the Crown and Bishop alternately, and held by the Rev. Samuel White, of Hatfield Hall, Durham. There are chapels for Primitive Methodists and Wesleyans. The population is about 2,700.
