MIDDLETON ST. GEORGE is a township and parish 5 miles east from Darlington, 4 south from Yarm, and 8 from Stockton-on-Tees, in the Southern division of the county, south-western division of the ward of Stockton, Darlington union and county court district, rural deanery of Stockton, and archdeaconry and diocese of Durham; it is bounded on the south by the Tees, and the Stockton and Darlington railway passes at the extremity of the parish, and has a station at Fighting Cocks, 1 1/2 miles from the village. The old parish church of St. George is a small plain structure. The church of St. Lawrence, which is used as a chapel of ease to the old parish church, was erected on a commanding eminence on the bank of the Tees in 1870-1, at a cost of upwards of £2,000: it will seat about 230 people, and consists of a chancel, nave and small tower, surmounted by a graceful spire. The living is a rectory, yearly value £100, with about 16 acres of glebe land, in the gift of Henry A. W. Cocks, esq. who is lay rector, and held by the Rev. Joseph George Richardson, b.a. of Durham University. The National schools, for boys and girls were erected by subscription in 1871, at a cost of nearly £2,000. Here is a Free Church. Henry A. W. Cocks, esq. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Henry A. W. Cocks, esq. and Mrs. Addison. The soil is a strong clay, that portion lying on the banks of the Tees being of a rich description, and produces excellent crops of wheat, beans, oats, turnips and barley. The area is 2,050 acres; rateable value, £12,634; the population in 1871 was 826.

MIDDLETON-ONE-ROW is a village in the township and parish of Middleton St. George, pleasantly situated on the north bank of the Tees, 5 miles from Darlington, and consists principally of one long row of good houses: owing to its proximity to the Dinsdale Baths, this place has much improved. An omnibus plies between the village and the Fighting Cocks station on the Stockton and Darlington railway.

OAK TREE is a hamlet 6 miles east of Darlington, and derives its name from the sign of a public house.

FIGHTING COCKS is a hamlet, partly in this and Low Dinsdale parishes, situated on the Darlington and Yarm road, 1 mile from Middleton-One-Row, and has a station on the Stockton and Darlington railway.
