NORTON is a parish, township and large and well-built village, having a station on the Ferry Hill and Coxhoe railway, half-a-mile distant, 1 1/2 miles north from Stockton-on-Tees, 8 from Sedgfield, 10 from Hartlepool and 240 from London, in the Southern division of the county, south-west division of Stockton ward, Stockton union and county court district, rural deanery of Stockton and archdeaconry and diocese of Durham: it is pleasantly situated on the turnpike road from Stockton to Sunderland: at the north end is a spacious green, surrounded by houses. The church of the Blessed Virgin stands on the highest ground in the village, towards the north: it is a cruciform building, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles and transepts, with a square central tower containing 3 bells: it was repaired and restored in 1823, and a further and complete restoration was made in 1876 at a cost of £3,577: the south transept was anciently called “Pity Porch,” from it being dedicated to Our Lady of Pity, and the north transept bore the name of “Blackiston Porch;” it contains several monuments of that family: in the south transept is a recumbent effigy, representing a knight in armour, with a rich canopy of tabernacle work over the head: on the south side of the chancel there is a stained window, placed there in 1853; there is a large stained window at the west end, erected by John Henry Fox, esq. also one in the south transept in memory of Isaac Hopper, erected by his widow in 1877, also five smaller ones of a memorial character: the font is a handsome specimen of carved stone work: there are several remains of ancient Norman workmanship: there are 550 sittings, all free. The parish register dates from 1574. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £700, with a good residence and 100 acres of glebe land, in the gift of the Bishop of Chester, and held by the Rev. John Ridley, M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. The Grammar school is supported by the rent of lands in this parish, held under the see of Durham; the dwelling-house, garden and school-room, which are freehold, are occupied by the master, rent free; these, with other property producing an income of £55 yearly, are enjoyed by the master, who, in respect of them, is required to teach six poor boys of the parish, appointed by the vicar, without any charge; the Rev. Edward Balshaw, B.A. is the present master. Board schools were erected in 1872 for boys, girls and infants at a cost of between £5,000 and £6,000, and will hold 500 children. The Wesleyans, Methodists and Society of Friends have each places of worship here. There are charities of about £30 annual value. Norton House is a handsome mansion, the residence of Mrs. Denton. The Bishop of Durham is lord of the manor; and Viscount Boyne, the trustees of the late John Hogg, the trustees of the late Robert Page Page, J.P. and Joseph Dodds, M.P. esqs. are the principal landowners. The land is rich and fertile, and produces abundant crops of wheat, oats, barley, turnips and potatoes. The area is 4,652 acres; rateable value, £23,264; the population in 1871 was 2,976.

BLACKISTON is a manor in this township.
