SEATON CAREW is a township in the parish of Stranton, and ecclesiastical parish and station on the West Hartlepool section of the North Eastern railway. The village is situated on the sea shore, 248 miles from London, 10 north-east of Stockton, and 1¾ south from West Hartlepool, and is held in high estimation as a healthy bathing-place; it is in the Southern division of the county, south-eastern division of Stockton ward, rural deanery of Stockton, archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. Salmon fishery is carried on here to a great extent. The village is well lighted with gas, and supplied with water from the Hartlepool Gas and Water Company’s works, and governed by a Local Board of Health. The church of the Holy Trinity is a modern building in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave and square tower; the cost of the erection amounted to about £1,600; the interior was re-arranged and re-seated with open benches in 1864, at a cost of £245; there are several stained windows; one of the south windows is a memorial to Mrs. Fawcus, of Over Dinsdale Hall. The register dates from the year 1831. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £160, with residence, in the gift of the Lawson family, and held by the Rev. John Lawson, M.A. of St. Alban Hall, Oxford. Here is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel, erected in 1830, and enlarged in 1878; and a meeting house for the Society of Friends. Here is a small brewery. Oughton, which is situated to the south-west of the village, is an ancient manor, formerly belonging to the Lamberts, who forfeited it in 1569: it is now the property of George Pyman, esq. J.P. The Earl of Eldon is lord of the manor and the chief landed proprietor. The soil is strong clay; subsoil, clay. The principal crops are wheat, oats, beans, clover, and tares. The township comprises an area of 2,559 acres; rateable value, £13,990; the population in 1861 was 884, and in 1871 was 1,025.
