SHILDON (NEW), or EAST THICKLEY, is an ecclesiastical parish and village, formed in 1868 out of the parishes of St. Andrew Auckland and Old Shildon: it is 9 miles south from Darlington, 10 from Durham and 249½ from London, in the rural deanery of Darlington, archdeaconry and diocese of Durham, and has a station on the North Eastern railway. The church of All Saints, a modern Gothic stone building, has chancel, nave and porch, 3 bells, and very handsome spire and clock: the bells and clock were presented by the late Joseph Pease, esq. The living is a vicarage, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham, yearly value, £300, with residence, and held by the Rev. William Hayton, M.A. of Durham University. The North Eastern Railway Company have extensive engine and railway wagon works here. Here are Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist and Congregational chapels, and the Society of Friends have a meeting house. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners and J. R. W. Hildyard, esq. are lords of the manor, the latter is chief landowner. The area is 465 acres; rateable value, £9,372. The population is over 3,000. The population of Old and New Shildon in 1871 was 5,574.

SHILDON (OLD) is a market-town, township and district parish, formed in 1837, and including the townships of MIDDRIDGE and MIDDRIDGE GRANGE, 250 miles from London, 9 west from Darlington and 3 south-east of Bishop Auckland, in the north-west division of Darlington ward, union and county court district of Auckland, archdeaconry and diocese of Durham, rural deanery of Darlington, and is a polling place for the southern division of the county, situated on the Stockton and Darlington railway, and having a station at New Shildon, called Shildon station. The North Eastern Railway Company supplies the town with gas. The township is governed by a Local Board of Health. The market day is Saturday. The church of St. John is a Gothic stone edifice, erected in 1834, and has a nave, tower containing 2 bells and porch, and contains an organ and will seat 470 persons. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, with residence, and about 1½ acres of glebe land, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham, and held by the Rev. Horatio Spurrier, M.A. of Oriel College, Oxford. There are National schools near the church, which have lately been enlarged, so as to hold about 400 children; the Friends’ British school, situated in Chapel street, with residence for master, has a slight endowment, left by the late Mr. Edward Walton; a Sunday school is held at the National school-room. The Wesleyans, Primitive Methodists, Congregationalists and United Methodist Free Church have places of worship. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor. The Earl of Eldon, Harry S. E. Smithson, esq. and H. E. Surtees, esq. are the chief landowners. The area of the township of Shildon is 552 acres; rateable value, £16,668. The population of Old and New Shildon in 1871 was 5,574, at present is nearly 10,000.

MIDDRIDGE GRANGE township is 2 miles south-east of Old Shildon; the Earl of Eldon is lord of the manor and the principal landowner. The area is 850 acres; rateable value, £3,264; the population in 1871 was 46.
Middridge is a small village and township in the parish of Shildon (Old), distant 8 miles north of Darlington, 2 east of Shildon, and 4 south of Bishop Auckland. Here is a National school, and the Primitive Methodists and Wesleyans have each a chapel. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor. Sir William Eden, bart. and the Earl of Eldon are the principal landowners. The township contains 1,159 acres; rateable value, £3,756; the population in 1871 was 331.
