SHOTLEY BRIDGE and BLACK HILL are adjoining places, forming almost one town, in the township and ecclesiastical parish of BENFIELDSIDE; it is a polling place for the Northern division of the county, in the west division of Chester ward, Lanchester union, Chester rural deanery, and Durham archdeaconry and diocese. There are stations at Black Hill and Shotley Bridge on the North Eastern railway. Midway between Black Hill and Shotley Bridge there is an exceedingly picturesque landscape, where the spectator may trace either side of the valley which fringes with rich foliage the Derwent for several miles.

Black Hill, from its proximity to the Consett iron works, is thriving.

Shotley Bridge is a small manufacturing town, and head of a county court district, 276 miles from London, 14 south-west from Gateshead, and 14 north-west from Durham, situate on the river Derwent, and the high road from Hexham to Durham. This was formerly only a hamlet, where swords, knife blades, and other trifling articles were made; but since the commencement of the extensive iron works in the vicinity, it has become the centre of a thriving and populous neighbourhood. The town has been lighted with gas since 1855, and many streets have been built, and a number of handsome villa residences erected. The church of St. Cuthbert, at Shotley Bridge, is a stone building, erected in 1851, on a site given by Thomas Wilson, esq. of Shotley Hall, who also contributed £450 towards its erection: it has a chancel, nave, aisles, tower, spire, porch, and an open roof. The register dates from the year 1848. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, with a residence, in the gift of the Crown and the Bishop of Durham alternately, and held by the Rev. Frederick Brewster Thompson, M.A. of University College, Durham. There is a school, partly endowed, for both sexes, at Shotley Bridge, and a school at Black Hill, supported by the proprietors of the Consett iron works. A Presbyterian church is in course of erection at Black Hill. There are Sunday schools attached to the different places of worship. The Wesleyan chapel is a handsome Gothic structure. The Catholic chapel at Black Hill was erected in 1856; it is a spacious edifice: an elegant spire was added in 1872: it will seat 900 persons. There are chapels for Wesleyans, Baptists and Primitive Methodists, and a meeting-house for the Friends. There is a large paper-mill, a corn-mill, and a saw-mill. Shotley Spa is a celebrated spring, noted for its efficacy in curing scrofulous complaints. Fairs are held on the Wednesday before May 13th and November 11th. The Mechanics’ Institute is a stone building, containing rooms for reading and amusement. An horticultural exhibition takes place annually here. The area is 1,620 acres; rateable value, £12,215; and the population in 1871 was 4,423.
