SOCKBURN is a parish, a small portion only of which is within the county of Durham, namely the township of Sockburn proper, which is situated on the north bank of the Tees, 7 miles south-east-by-south from Darlington, 7 from Yarm, 4 from East Cowton station on the North Eastern railway, and 10 from Stockton-on-Tees. The other portion of the parish, comprising the townships of GIRSBY and OVER DINSDALE, are situated on the opposite side of the river Tees and in the North Riding of Yorkshire. The township is in the Southern division of the county, south-western division of Stockton ward, and union and county court district of Darlington. The parish church of All Saints is in Yorkshire, in the township of Girsby. The Hall, the residence of Geo. Dixon, esq. is a handsome modern edifice in the Domestic Gothic style, and is approached by a wooden bridge across the river Tees, near which are the remains of an old church, which was partially demolished in the year 1838. The area is 653 acres; rateable value, £971; and the population in 1871 was 35.
