WEST HARTLEPOOL is a maritime town, station and sectional department for the North Eastern Railway Company, within the civil parish of Stranton, 250 miles from London, 10 north-north-east from Stockton and 21 east-south-east from Durham: it is in the Southern division of the county, in the Stockton ward, Hartlepool union and county court district, rural deanery of Stockton, archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. West Hartlepool is situate 72 miles from Leeds, with which town, and the manufacturing districts of Yorkshire and Lancashire, it is connected by the Leeds Northern branch of the North Eastern Railway Company. The town is governed by commissioners constituted under the authority of the West Hartlepool Ex-tension and Improvement Act, 1870, 33 and 34 Vic. cap. 113: it is paved, lighted with gas, and well supplied with good water.

The peninsula on which Hartlepool stands is washed on the north by the German Ocean, and is bounded on the north-west by what was formerly a salt marsh or slake, the greater part of which is now being converted into large docks and basins; on the other side stood the hamlets of EAST and WEST STRAUNTON (or Stranton), which had remained stationary, having in the years which elapsed between 1801 and 1831 increased their population only from 325 to 381; but, in 1841, the Port Clarence and the Stockton and Hartlepool railways opened a direct access from the interior to the coast at this point, and the promoters of these undertakings finding it inconvenient to ship their coals as they had done for some time in the "old dock" (the property at that time of the Hartlepool Dock and Railway Company), in the year 1845 obtained an Act for the construction of a harbour and dock to the south-west of the old dock at Hartlepool: the new dock was opened on the 1st of June, 1847, and while for three years the total quantity of coals conveyed by the Stockton and Hartlepool railway and shipped at the old docks was only 117,441 tons, yet during the first three years of the existence of the West harbour and docks, that is, from June, 1847, to June, 1850, the quantity shipped was 886,271 tons, and in the year ending June, 1851, no less than 578,876 tons were shipped, of which about one-fourth was to foreign countries and to our colonies.

In May, 1852, the Leeds and Thirsk railway connected this place with their system by a branch line. On the 1st of June following, a second dock of 14 acres (called the "Jackson Dock," after Ralph Ward Jackson, esq. chairman of the West Hartlepool Harbour and Railway Company) was opened, and on the 3rd June, 1856, the third, or Swainson Dock, of 12½ acres was opened. There are now (1878) new docks being formed, and near completion, of about 20 acres, which will give considerable increase of quay room. The harbour contains 44 acres within the shelter of its piers, and the docks, 46½ acres more, are capable of receiving 500 sail of ships at one time. The depths of water in the West Harbour are stated to be at neap tides 17 feet, spring tides 21 feet, and ships of a large class, with 18 feet draught, load out in coal from the dock with ease, safety, and dispatch.

During the year 1876 the quantity of coal and coke shipped here was 838,677 tons, and the number of ships entered to load and for refuge was 4,131; the amount of merchandise goods shipped was 48,755 tons; the imports were 255,211 quarters of grain, 418,947 loads of timber, 54,184 tons of general goods, 2,131 head of cattle, and 7,757 sheep and pigs. The declared value to the Customs of merchandise shipped from West Hartlepool during the year 1876, by means of its lines of first-class steamers running to Hamburg and Gothenburg and other parts to the west of the Continent, amounted to £1,477,463. On the 31st of March, 1878, there were 203 vessels with an aggregate tonnage of 101,737 belonging to the port. The trade returns for the year ending same date were—foreign cargoes inward, 1,393; tons, 380,128; foreign cargoes outward, 1,809; tons, 498,728; ballast inward, 490; tons, 128,668; ballast outward, 169; tons, 88,635; coasting cargoes inward, 609; tons, 85,182; coasting cargoes outward, 3,039; tons, 393,815; duties received, customs &c. £19,462; ditto on account of mercantile marine, £13,812.

The whole of the docks, warehouses, and railways became in 1865 the property of the North Eastern Railway Company, by which railway communication to all parts of the kingdom is effected, and is constant, rapid and direct.

The staple trade of the town consists of extensive iron and steel manufactories, iron ship building, steam sawing and planing mills, and a steam corn mill, brick, lime, cement and grease manufactories, creosote and paint works, exportation of coal and coke, the importation of timber and general produce; there are also graving docks for the repairs of ships of a large class. Here are three banks, those of Messrs. Backhouse and Co. a branch of the National Provincial Bank of England, and a branch of the North Eastern Banking Company.

The principal object in natural curiosities here is a submerged forest, forming part of the sea-beach, where perfect acorns and hazel nuts, probably grown twenty centuries since, may frequently be picked up.

The town is comprised in two ecclesiastical parishes—Christ Church, or West Hartlepool, and St. James's, formed out of the old parish of Stranton. Christ Church is in the Early English style, and was erected in 1854 by Ralph Ward Jackson, esq. M.P. at a cost of £12,000: it consists of chancel, nave, transepts, and lofty tower (originally intended for a beacon), which contains a peal of 6 bells: the windows are all stained and there is a fine organ. The register dates from the year 1854. The living is a vicarage, with residence, yearly value about £400, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham and held by the Rev. Charles Edwin Palmer, who is non-resident: the curate-in-charge is the Rev. James Knowles Harrison.

St. James' church, situate in Whitby street, is in the Early Decorated style, and consists of chancel, nave and aisles, and is capable of seating 600 persons: it was erected in 1868, at a cost of about £3,000, but the chancel and north aisle have been added since. The register dates from the year 1868. The living is a perpetual curacy, yearly value £200, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham and held by the Rev. Charles Atkinson Bullick, M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin.

St. Joseph's Catholic chapel is in Church street, but a more handsome and commodious building is to be erected: there are schools in connection with this chapel.

The Jews' Synagogue, situated in Whitby street, is a small plain building, erected in 1872, at a cost of £1,100, including site, and is capable of seating 170 persons: in the rear is a school-room, to hold 80 children.

The Congregational church, in Tower street, is a handsome and commodious structure, erected in 1857, at a cost of £4,000, and is capable of seating 700 persons.

The United Methodists have two chapels here, in Lynn and Burbank streets; the former is a stone building, erected in 1851, at a cost of £700, to seat 550 persons; in 1861 this chapel was enlarged, at a cost of £1,000, and has now sittings for 800: the latter is a large brick building, erected in 1868 at a cost of £1,130, including site: this building is now used as a school and class-rooms, at which there are 500 children attending. A chapel was built in 1875 immediately adjoining the last mentioned: it is a fine commodious place of worship, will seat 1,100 persons, and cost £6,000.

The Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1871-2, at a cost of £5,000, is a handsome brick building, with stone dressings, in the Italian style: the front is entirely of stone, and consists of a Corinthian portico of four columns, access being had by a noble flight of steps extending the whole width of the chapel: there are sittings for 1,250 persons: beneath the chapel, on the basement, is a large school-room, capable of seating 600 children, in connection with which are four vestries and a large meeting-room.

The old Wesleyan chapel is used as a Temperance hall.

The Primitive Methodist chapel is a large stone building, erected in 1861, at a cost of £1,500, and is capable of seating 700 persons: the school is being enlarged and extensive alterations are being made in the interior of the chapel, at an additional cost of £1,100. There is also a Primitive Methodist chapel at Middleton.

The Methodist New Connexion and Baptists have also places of worship here.

There is a handsome schoolhouse in Church square, attended by 300 boys, 300 girls, and 200 infants; also several other National and private schools, well attended: there are Sunday schools held in connection with each place of worship.

The Police Station, situate at the junction of Church street and Clarence road, is a large brick building, with stone dressings, erected in 1872, at a cost of about £4,500; the court-room, at which the petty sessions are held every Monday, is 46 ft. long, 21 ft. wide, and 20 ft. high. There are six cells, three for males and three for females; one of each number is used for disorderlies; there are also retiring rooms for the justices and witnesses. The superintendent and some of the force reside on the premises. The force consists of 1 superintendent, 1 inspector, 6 sergeants and 28 constables, who are under the control of the chief of the county constabulary. There is also a station in Knowles street.

The Hartlepool Exchange, in Mainsforth terrace, is a handsome Gothic structure, built of red brick with stone dressings: it was erected in 1875, at a cost of £10,000, and contains a large hall, used as a mercantile exchange; the rest of the building is divided into suites of offices, the north-eastern portion being occupied by the Post Office; the North Eastern Bank (branch) is also located in this building.

The Mechanics’ and Literary Institute is a handsome stone building in Church street, with a full suite of rooms, including reading-room, library containing 3,000 volumes, and museum; also a large concert hall and lecture-room. The Government School of Art, established here in 1874, also occupies a portion of this building.

The Druids and Freemasons have halls here.

The Gaiety Theatre, situate in Mainsforth terrace, is a handsome building in the Corinthian style, erected in 1868, at a cost of £6,000, and is capable of holding 1,800 people. There is a plentiful supply of water in case of fire, and the place can be cleared in two minutes, by 5 doors.

The Victoria Theatre Royal, in Whitby street, is a plain brick building, capable of holding about 1,500 people; the stage is 22 feet by 26 feet.

The market day is on Saturday.

The “Northern Evening Mail” is published here daily; the “South Durham Mercury,” with which the “Stockton and Hartlepool Mercury” is incorporated, is published here every Friday evening, and the “South Durham Herald” every Saturday.

Gross estimated rental, £139,474; rateable value, £111,657, which includes the whole of the parish of Stranton. In January, 1858, its population was 12,200 and in 1871 was 22,250, including Stranton and Middleton.

Middleton in Stranton is a place situated between East and West Hartlepool: it is in the civil parish of Stranton, ecclesiastical parish of Christ Church, West Hartlepool, and is governed by a Local Board, which was created in 1867: the extensive iron works of Thos. Richard and Son are here, also the shipbuilding yard belonging to Edward Withy and Co.; besides which there are boat builders, packing makers, coppersmiths, and other branches of the shipbuilding trade.
