Blyth, Northumberland: People and Places of 1879

Published in 1879

BLYTH (SOUTH), with the lordship of NEWSHAM, is a township, town, station on the Blyth and Tyne railway, seaport, and chapelry, principally in the parish of Earsdon, but partly in that of Horton, seated on the southern bank of the river Blyth, at its junction with the German Ocean: it is 283 miles from London, 13 north-north-east from Newcastle by road, and 14½ by railroad, 9 north from Shields, and 9 south-east from Morpeth, in the Southern division of the county, east division of Castle ward, Tynemouth union, North Shields county court district, and rural deanery of Newcastle east, Northumberland archdeaconry, Durham diocese, York province. The town has been much improved in appearance and trade, and some new streets formed; there are several comfortable inns, lodging-houses, and well-filled shops. The sands are smooth, firm, and elastic, and, descending gradually, render bathing safe and agreeable. The harbour of Blyth is very safe, and there are few instances upon record of vessels suffering damage upon entering it, even in the most tempestuous weather: it has a south-easterly outlet, and with the wind in any point, from north-north-east to west-south-west, can be entered by vessels under canvas. There are two lighthouses, one on the north and one on the south side of the harbour. This is also a lifeboat station with two life boats, one on either side of the harbour. Considerable improvements in the harbour have been made by a company. The town is lighted with gas, supplied with water, and is partly paved. The church, situated in Northumberland street, is the private property of Sir M. W. Ridley, bart. M.P.; it is a stone building, and has chancel and nave. The living is a donative, with a small endowment; the Rev. Charles John Naters, of Durham University, is the minister. The cemetery for Blyth district is situated about 1½ miles south from Blyth, near to the seacoast; it contains two mortuary chapels. The cemetery for Cowpen township is situated about half a mile west of Cowpen Quay and consists of 14 acres, with two mortuary chapels connected by a central spire. The United Presbyterian chapel, in Bridge street, is a handsome stone building: it will seat about 800 persons. The Congregational Free Church, in Carlton street, is a brick building which will seat about 600 persons. The English Presbyterian, situated at the top of Waterloo road, is a handsome Gothic building. The trade of Blyth is principally carried on with ports in France and the Baltic and Mediterranean. The principal business is in coal, of which large quantities, of excellent quality, are brought down from Cowpen, Newsham, North Seaton and Cambois collieries: the quantity of coals shipped from Blyth Creek is upwards of 200,000 tons yearly. Ship building is carried on to some extent; the ship building yards are commodious, possessing ample accommodation for the repair of vessels; and there is a first-rate dock, two patent slipways, and a floating dock and iron shipbuilding yard. There are rope, chain-cable, mast, block, and sail manufactories, saltworks, gasworks, waterworks, corn mills, and a brewery, and there are private warm, cold and shower baths, a mechanics' institution, library and reading room. There are many persons engaged in the salmon and herring fishery during the months of July and August: the fishing is also prosecuted on a smaller scale at other times. The Good Templars' Hall in Wellington street, Cowpen Quay, is a good room to hold 300 persons. The Mechanics' Institute having some time since been burned down, the Old English Presbyterian Church in Church street is at present used as a reading room and library: it is well supplied with books, newspapers and periodicals, the library consisting of 4,000 volumes: a new building is about to be erected on a site in Bridge street, given by Sir Matthew White Ridley, bart., who has also subscribed £200 for the purpose. A newspaper, "The Blyth Weekly News," is published on Friday. A small market for butchers' meat, vegetables, and fish, is held every Saturday. Adjacent to the town are several extensive collieries. Gasworks were erected in 1852 by a company, in forty-one shares, at £50; and waterworks were provided at the private expense of Sir Matthew White Ridley, bart. M.P. who is lord of the manor and principal land-owner. The area, with Newsham lordship, is 1,180 acres; rateable value, £10,636 10s.; the population in 1862 was 1,953, and in 1871 was 2,878.

NEWSHAM is a lordship and joint township with Blyth, and station on the Blyth and Tyne railway, in the parish of Earsdon, 1½ miles south-west from Blyth, situated close to the German Ocean. The houses are chiefly occupied by colliers. Here are extensive collieries, worked by the Cowpen and North Seaton Coal Co. and brick works, belonging to J. Wilkinson, of Blyth. Sir Matthew White Ridley, bart. M.P. is lord of the manor and the principal landowner.

LINKHOUSE is a hamlet in the above lordship, 1 mile south of Blyth.

Railway Station, George Frost, station master

Cowpen is a township in the parochial chapelry of Horton, from which it is distant 3 miles north-east and 7 south-south-east of Morpeth: it consists of COWPEN VILLAGE, COWPEN QUAY, CROFTON, and WATERLOO. The village is situated on the southern bank of the river Blyth. There is a Catholic chapel, dedicated to St. Cuthbert, with a school attached, built and endowed by the late M. J. H. Sidney, esq. Henry Sidney, esq. resides at Cowpen Hall, a stone building pleasantly situated close to the village in some tastefully-laid-out grounds of small extent; he is lord of the manor and the principal landowner. The population of the whole township in 1861 was 6,291, and in 1871 was 7,913; the acreage is 1,738; rateable value, £27,669 11s. 8d.

WATERLOO with COWPEN QUAY and CROFTON, form populous suburbs adjoining the town of Blyth, in the township of Cowpen, parish of Horton, union of Tynemouth, and county court district of Morpeth: this district has been much improved within the last few years, and several streets have been formed. The chapel of ease (St. Mary's) was erected in 1863: it is a Gothic stone building, consisting of chancel, nave, with tower and small spire, 1 bell, and contains a well-toned organ. The Rev. William Greenwell, M.A. of Durham University, surrogate, and vicar of Horton, is the officiating clergyman. The Catholic church of Our Blessed Lady and St. Wilfrid in Waterloo road, was erected in 1869 and '70, and is a handsome stone building in the Early English style, having an apse chancel, containing three handsome stained windows, and a very beautiful carved stone reredos: the nave is 118 feet long and 36 wide, and will seat 570 worshippers: the Rev. Peter Wilfrid Dromgoole, o.s.b. is the priest. The Methodist New Connexion chapel, in Waterloo road, is a handsome brick building, with a lofty tower and small spire, erected in 1865: it will seat 450 persons: there are several stained windows: it contains an organ. There is a large Sunday school room attached. The Wesleyan chapel, near Blyth Bridge, erected in 1867, is a handsome red brick building with stone dressings: it will seat 800 persons. The Primitive Methodist chapel, at Cowpen Quay, is a large plain brick building: it will seat 800 persons. The Cowpen United District School Board was formed in 1874. Schools have been erected at Cowpen Quay and Newsham; those at Newsham at a cost of £3,616, to hold 300, and those at Cowpen Quay at a cost of £4,710, to hold 500 boys, girls and infants. It is in contemplation to build schools at Blyth: at present the Board schools are held in school rooms rented by the Board, of the Congregational and English Presbyterian chapels. The United Methodist Free Church, in Turner street, is a neat building; it will seat about 300 persons. The Theatre Royal in Waterloo is a spacious and well-arranged building, tastefully fitted up and highly decorated; it has been much enlarged by Mr. Richard Fynes, proprietor, and will now seat 2,000 persons. The Blyth and Cowpen Central Hall, situated at Waterloo, was erected in 1857, and cost about £1,600, raised in shares: its dimensions are, at the extremes, 60 by 80 feet: the building proper is 40 by 80 feet, and contains nine rooms, seven on the ground floor, two on the second floor; on the latter is an assembly room,

28 by 76 feet, 18 feet high, to hold 1,000 persons; on the ground floor is a small lecture room, and other rooms used for offices of the local board, school board &c.; the ground on which it stands was given by the trustees of the Thoroton and Croft estate. The principal trades carried on here are shipbuilding, glass bottle works, saw and corn mills, and the extensive collieries of the Cowpen and North Seaton Coal Co. Here are several convenient wharves and staiths for shipping of coals from the various tramways west of the town

[The names of residents in Waterloo, Cowpen Quay, and Crofton, are given with those of Blyth.]
