BOLAM is a parish, consisting of eight townships:—viz. BELSAY, BOLAM, BOLAM VICARAGE, BRADFORD, SHORTFLATT, HARNHAM, GALLOWHILL and TREWICK. The township of Bolam is 290 miles north from London, 16 north from Newcastle, 9 west-by-south from Morpeth, and 1½ miles south-east from Angerton station, Northern division of the county, west division of Morpeth ward, Ponteland union, county court district of Morpeth, rural deanery of Morpeth, Lindisfarne archdeaconry and Durham diocese, situated near the Ponteland turnpike road. The church of St. Andrew is a very ancient Norman stone building, has a chancel, nave, north aisle, tower with 1 bell and porch. The register dates from the year 1662. The living is a vicarage, with residence and 139 acres of glebe, yearly value £260, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held by the Rev. Septimus Stanley Meggison, B.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. Here are quarries of freestone, a limekiln and a small colliery. Bolam House is the seat of Lord Decies; Shortflatt Tower the seat of Captain William Seton-Dent. Lord Decies is lord of the manor and the sole landowner. The soil is generally fertile; the subsoil is various. The chief crops are grass, oats, wheat and turnips. The area of the township is 1,119 acres; rateable value, £1,543; the population in 1871 was 79. The area of the entire parish is 7,502 acres; and the population in 1871 was 738.

BOLAM VICARAGE is a township half-a-mile from Bolam. The Rev. S. S. Meggison is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The area is 139 acres; rateable value, £201. The population in 1871 was 13.

BELSAY is a township and village, situated on the turnpike road from Newcastle to Jedburgh, 4 miles south from Angerton railway station, 13 miles north-by-west from Newcastle, and 10 west-by-south from Morpeth. The village consists of an arcade (a handsome row of stone buildings) with piazza in front; it has a school, with master's residence, where divine service is performed by the vicar of the parish on Sunday afternoon. Belsay Castle, the seat of Sir Arthur Edward Middleton, bart. M.P. is a handsome modern mansion, in the Grecian style; in the grounds are the remains of a very ancient castle. Sir A. E. Middleton, bart. is lord of the manor and owner. The soil is loamy, with limestone; subsoil, various. The chief crops are pasture, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 2,542 acres; rateable value, £3,499.

BRADFORD township is 2½ miles south-west from Bolam. Sir A. E. Middleton, bart. M.P. and Sir J. Swinburne, bart. are the owners and also lords of the manor. The area is 1,093 acres; rateable value, £1,116; the population in 1871 was 39.

HARNHAM township is 1½ miles south-west from Bolam. T. Leighton, esq. Lord Decies and Sir A. E. Middleton, bart. M.P. (who is also lord of the manor), are the proprietors. The area is 701 acres; rateable value, £765; the population in 1871 was 78.

SHORTFLATT township is 1¼ miles south from Bolam.
