CAMBO is a village, township, and ecclesiastical parish formed in 1844 from the mother parish of Hartburn; it is 20 miles north-west from Newcastle, 12 west from Morpeth, 19 north from Hexham, 24 from Alnwick, in the Southern division of the county, west division of Morpeth ward, Morpeth union, and county court district, rural deanery of Morpeth, Lindisfarne archdeaconry, and Durham diocese. The ecclesiastical parish consists of the townships of CAMBO, DEANHAM, FAIRNLEY, GREEN LEIGHTON, HARTINGTON, HARTINGTON HALL, HARWOOD, ROTHLEY, SHAFTOE (EAST), SHAFTOE (WEST), and WALLINGTON. The village is situated on the roads leading from Newcastle to Jedburgh, and from Hexham to Alnmouth. The church of the Holy Trinity is a handsome Gothic stone building; it consists of a circular chancel, nave and bell turret with 1 bell. The register dates from the year 1844. The living is a vicarage, the gross income returned at £130 yearly, in the gift of the Vicar of Hartburn and held by the Rev. Charles Bennett, M.A. of Hatfield Hall, Durham. There is a mixed school under government inspection, with a master's residence, free. There is a reading room and also a subscription library containing 1,500 volumes. There are large quantities of freestone and limestone. Sir Walter Calverley Trevelyan, bart. is the lord of the manor and landowner. The soil is rich loam, and the subsoil is clay. The land is chiefly in pasture. The area of the township is 691 acres; rateable value, £875; the population in 1871 was 99; the area of the ecclesiastical parish is 15,472 acres; the population in 1871 was 638.
DEANHAM township is 2 miles south; it is the property of Lord Decies, who is lord of the manor. The area is 766 acres; rateable value £839; the population in 1871 was 21.
FAIRNLEY township is 2¾ miles north-west, and is in the union of Rothbury; it is the property of the lord of the manor, Sir W. C. Trevelyan, bart. The area is 216 acres; rateable value £383; the population in 1871 was 12.
GREEN LEIGHTON is a township 4½ miles north, in the union of Rothbury. Sir W. C. Trevelyan, bart. is lord of the manor and owner. The soil is limestone and peat. The area is 1,670 acres; rateable value, £795; the population in 1871 was 13.
HARTINGTON township is 2½ miles north-west, and is in Rothbury union. There are a limestone and a freestone quarry. It is the property of Sir W. C. Trevelyan, bart. who is also lord of the manor. The area is 2,011 acres; rateable value, £1,633; the population in 1871 was 59.
HARTINGTON HALL township is 2 miles north, in the Rothbury union. Sir W. C. Trevelyan, bart. is lord of the manor and owner. The soil is clay, limestone, and whin. The principal crops, oats, turnips and pasturage. The area is 1,001 acres; rateable value, £1,025; the population in 1871 was 26.
HARWOOD is a township, 4 miles north-west, in Rothbury union. At Gunners Box, in this township, are remains of a Roman camp. Sir W. C. Trevelyan, bart. is lord of the manor and landowner. The area is 3,960 acres, chiefly moorland and peat; rateable value, £805; the population in 1871 was 29.
ROTHLEY is a township and village 2½ miles north-east from Cambo; it is in the Northern division of the county and in the union of Rothbury. The Long Witton station on the North British railway is in this township. A little north of the village, on the summit of a lofty crag, is Rothley Castle, an ornamental old ruin. Sir W. C. Trevelyan, bart. is lord of the manor and landowner. The soil is loamy and produces pasture, turnips and oats. The area is 2,822 acres; rateable value, £2,025; the population in 1871 was 146.
SHAFTOE (EAST) is 4 miles south-east; it is in Castle Ward union. Lord Decies is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The area is 622 acres; rateable value, £567; the population in 1871 was 28.
SHAFTOE (WEST) is a township 3½ miles south-east, and is in the union of Castle ward; it is the property of Lord Decies, who is lord of the manor. The area is 502 acres; rateable value, £491; the population in 1871 was 21.
WALLINGTON demesne, or township is half a mile south; it is in Morpeth union. Wallington Hall, the seat of Sir Walter Calverley Trevelyan, bart. D.L., J.P. is a handsome stone mansion. The river Wansbeck runs at the foot of the park, and is crossed by a noble stone bridge with three arches and open battlements. Sir W. C. Trevelyan, bart. is lord of the manor and chief land-
