ST. HELEN'S AUCKLAND

ST. HELEN’S AUCKLAND is a township and parish, including the township of West Auckland adjoining, 3 miles south-west from Bishop Auckland and $259\frac{1}{2}$ from London, in the north-west division of the Darlington ward, Southern division of the county, union and county court district of Bishop Auckland, rural deanery of northern division of Darlington, archdeaconry of Durham and diocese of Durham, situated on the Gaunless, a small stream. The Stockton and Darlington railway branch has a passenger station here, called West Auckland. The village is lighted with gas supplied from West Auckland. The church of St. Helen is an ancient structure : there are some fine Norman arches in the interior : the church was restored in 1866 and is capable of seating 350 ; it comprises chancel, nave and aisle ; the belfry contains 2 bells. The register dates from the year 1593. The living is a vicarage, yearly value between £400 and £500, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham and held by the Rev. William Latham Broughton, L.TH. of Durham University. Here is a British school for boys and girls, erected by the owners of the St. Helen’s colliery with the assistance of the owners of adjoining collieries, on land which was given by the late Sir George Musgrave, bart. : it is supported by voluntary contributions. The Primitive Methodists have a place of worship here. Here are two large collieries, called St. Helen’s and West Auckland, employing a great number of hands. Sir Richard Courtenay Musgrave, bart. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are Sir William Eden, bart. Sir Richard C. Musgrave, bart. and the trustees of Sir Thomas Clavering, bart. The area is 1,361 acres ; rateable value, £8,981 ; the population in 1871 was 972.

West Auckland is a township, station on the North Eastern railway, and large pleasant village in the parish of St. Helen’s and adjoining it, and a polling place for the Southern division of the county, $3\frac{1}{2}$ miles south-west from Bishop Auckland, situated on a small stream called the Gaunless. There is a National and Endowed school for boys and girls, attended by about 300 children ; also chapels for Wesleyans and the Methodist Free Church. Here is a large brewery. Fairs are held here for cattle in March and October. The village is lighted with gas. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are Sir William Eden, bart. and F. D. Johnson, esq. The township contains 3,300 acres ; rateable value, £15,100 ; the population in 1871 was 3,187.
