STOCKTON-UPON-TEES.

STOCKTON-UPON-TEES is a handsome market town, township, municipal and parliamentary borough, parish, union town, head of a county court district, and a river port, 20 miles south-south-east from Durham, 27 south from Sunderland, 10 south-south-west from Hartlepool, 11 east-north-east from Darlington, 238 north-north-west (by rail) from London, and 36 south-south-east from Newcastle-upon-Tyne; it is a polling place for the Southern division of the county, in the south-west division of Stockton ward; rural deanery of Stockton, archdeaconry and diocese of Durham: it is situated near the mouth of the Tees, which is crossed by a handsome stone bridge of five arches to South Stockton, a place of rising importance in Yorkshire: the bridge was commenced in 1764, and completed in 1769, at an expense of £8,000. The town is well supplied with water by the Stockton and Middlesbrough Water Company, whose Act was passed in 1851. Stockton possesses three lines of railway, viz. the Stockton and Darlington, the West Hartlepool Harbour and the North Eastern railways, the whole three lines now belonging to the North Eastern system.

The town originally consisted of one long street, with several smaller ones branching off in various directions, and during the last twenty years has quadrupled its population: it is well paved and lighted with gas and is seated on a diluvial bed of clay, of great thickness, overlaying a stratum of sand-stone, which is principally visible in the bed of the river at the great whin-dyke at Preston. The town is of great antiquity: the ancient castle which stood here is supposed to have been occupied by the Romans, but the opinion has no other foundation than the circumstance of a coin of Nero having been found many years ago, when digging the foundation of a quay near the spot where the castle wall joined the river: the castle was destroyed about 1652. Fine views are obtained from many points in the vicinity of the town, particularly the prospect embracing the Cleveland Hills, and the conical eminence known by the appellation of Roseberry Topping.

The borough of Stockton was closely connected with the castle, and may boast of its antiquity; the first charter being lost, its date is unknown, but is supposed to have been granted by King John in the second year of his reign, 1201; this charter has been superseded by the Municipal Act, passed in 1835, which vested the government in a mayor, six aldermen, and eighteen councillors, under the style of the Mayor, Aldermen, Burgesses and Commonalty of the Borough of Stockton. The same act divided the borough into two wards, and conferred on it a commission of the peace. By the provisions of an Act of Parliament entitled the "Stockton Extension and Improvement Act," passed in 1852, the boundaries of the borough have been altered and made co-extensive with the township, which is divided into four wards: the town council now consists of a mayor, eight aldermen and twenty-four councillors: the corporation is constituted the Urban Sanitary Authority, with all the powers of the Public Health Act. The revenue of the corporation is derived from the rents of houses and the stallage of the shambles and market-place, which are all freehold and from the income of other property held by lease under the Ecclesiastical Commissioners and from the gas works bought from a limited company by the Corporation.

By "The Representation of the People Act, 1867," Stockton was made a parliamentary borough and returns one member. The borough comprises the township of Stockton, the township of Thornaby (in Yorkshire), part of the township of Linthorpe, and part of the parish of Norton: it is divided into six ecclesiastical parishes called respectively, St. Thomas, Holy Trinity, St. James, St. John, St. Paul and St. Peter.

The parish church of St. Thomas, which was erected during the reign of Queen Anne, is situated in High-street and is a spacious brick structure, with freestone dressings: it is 150 feet in length by 67 in breadth, with a tower at the west end containing a clock and a peal of six bells: the entrance is through the tower: the nave is separated from the aisle by five square pillars, supporting semicircular arches: there are three galleries, one of which (the western) contains a fine-toned organ: the east window is stained, representing the Saviour. The register dates from the year 1702. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £1,002 with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham, and held by the Rev. Canon Falconer, L.Th. of Dublin University.

Holy Trinity church, completed in 1837, and situated at the south entrance of the town, is a handsome Gothic structure, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, and transepts with a square tower surmounted by an octagonal spire: there are two stained windows. The register dates from the year 1837. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, with three acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham and held by the Rev. Richard Dutton Kennicott, B.A. of University College, Oxford: the curate in charge is the Rev. William Bethell, of Durham University.

St. James', erected in 1867 and 1868 at a cost of £6,000, is a beautiful building, after the Early French Decorated style, and has chancel, nave, aisles and transepts, organ chamber and tower with spire 130 feet high: it is built entirely of stone; the wall stones are Bradford parpoint, with Dunhouse dressings; the relief arches of the windows are composed of Dunhouse and Corsham Down stone: the spire rises from a lantern of octagonal shape, the mullions of which are of Penrith red sandstone; the tracery and gargoyles are elaborately carved; the capitals of the pillars, the arches, and all the interior dressings, are of fine cream-coloured Bath stone; the bases of the pillars of Corsham Down, and the pillars themselves, corbel shafts, and arch bands of red sandstone: the pulpit and font are of Caen stone, with marble and alabaster shafts, moulded bases and carved capitals: a handsome stained window of five lights,

with rich and elaborate tracery, fills the east end of the chancel, and is a memorial to the mother and two members of the family of the donor, Timothy Crosby, esq. solicitor, and to Messrs. Faber and Wilson, with whom he served his articles: the roofs of the nave, aisles and transepts are open-timbered, and that of the chancel of the shape termed waggon: the sanctuary, chancel, transepts and aisles of the church are paved throughout with mosiac encaustic tiles. The church was consecrated by the Bishop of Durham, May 11th, 1868, from which year the register dates. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £420, with residence, in the alternate gift of the Crown and the Bishop of Durham, the presentation of the first vicar having been made by the Crown at the recommendation of the bishop, and is held by the Rev. Thomas Law, who was for several years curate of the parish church of Stockton.

The district of St. John the Baptist was separated from the mother parish in the year 1870, when the Rev. T. W. McCririck, M.A. was appointed the first minister, on the nomination of the patron, the Venerable Archdeacon White, of Grahamstown, South Africa. The church in Alma street, is built of brick in the Basilican style, and consists of sanctuary, nave and aisles: there is one stained window representing The Crucifixion: there are sittings for 750 persons: it was erected in 1873-4 from designs by W. White, esq. F.R.S. London, brother to the patron. The register dates from the year 1872. The living is a rectory, yearly value £350 with an endowment of £120 a year for the curate, in the gift of the Bishop of the diocese, and held by the Rev. Thomas William McCririck, M.A. of St. Alban Hall, Oxford.

The district of St. Paul was separated from the mother parish in November, 1875, when the Rev. James Steel was appointed the first incumbent; the Crown and the bishop of the diocese are alternate patrons of the living: there being no church at present, service is conducted in a temporary structure in Wellington street; and a church will be erected when the funds are provided; the present incumbent is the Rev. Frederick A. Borton, of St. Bees; the income is £200, which will be increased on the building of the church.

The district of St. Peter was separated from the parish of Holy Trinity in November, 1875; the first incumbent was the Rev. Henry Woodman, M.A. of St. John's College, Cambridge; the Crown and the bishop of the diocese are alternate patrons of the living; Divine service is at present conducted in a temporary wooden structure in Yarm lane, but a church will probably be commenced in the spring of 1879; it will be of stone, in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and square tower with four pinnacles, to seat 750 persons; the designs are furnished by Alfred J. Martin, architect, Darlington; the living will be a vicarage, yearly value £300, with residence; the present income is £200, to be increased by contributions from the congregation.

St. Mary's Catholic church occupies a commanding site in the Norton road: it is a handsome edifice in the Early English style: the foundation-stone was laid on the 31st May, 1841, and on the 7th July, 1842, it was opened, and dedicated by the Right Rev. Dr. Mostyn, vicar apostolic of the Northern district: the designs were supplied by the elder Pugin: it was enlarged at a cost of over £3,000 in 1870, and now consists of chancel, nave, aisles and square tower, which is to be surmounted by a spire as soon as the necessary funds can be raised; the additions were—a south aisle, containing five double equilateral windows, a baptistery with double window, the head filled in with a circular window, on the outside of which is a statue of one of the Apostles: the baptistery contains a font, by Earp, of London: the chancel, which is semicircular in form, has thirteen lancet windows filled with stained glass, representing the twelve Apostles, with Our Lord in the centre; there is also a handsome stained window in the south aisle, of St. Augustine preaching to the Ancient Britons: a magnificent altar, by Earp, was also erected at a cost of £300, and a ladye chapel on the north side of the chancel: the organ (a fine one) was newly cased and otherwise improved by Messrs. Foster and Andrews, of Hull: the designs for these improvements and extensions were supplied by Messrs. Goldie and Child, of London. The edifice will seat 750 persons: adjacent are the schools, which have room for about 950 children, who are taught by a community of nuns, under the supervision of the Rev. John William Carlile, the priest.

St. George's Presbyterian Church, in Yarm lane, was built in 1876; it is Gothic, and consists of nave, transepts and spire, 130 feet in height, containing one bell; the tracery of several of the windows is very handsome; there are sittings for nearly 800 persons; there is a large lecture hall behind the church, with vestry and cloak rooms; the cost, including the site, was £7,500. The Rev. Hugh Rose, M.A. is the minister.

St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, in Tower street, is a plain brick building, erected in 1861. The Rev. John Bogue, M.A. is the minister.

There are also places of worship for most Protestant denominations.

The Cemetery, the property of the Corporation, is distant about half a mile north-west from the town, and has two mortuary chapels connected by a porch, through which is a drive, and over it a small bell turret.

There are National and Sunday Schools attached to the several places of worship. Handsome schools have also been erected by the School Board for boys, girls and infants in Mill lane; another set of Board Schools are in course of erection in Bailey street, Portrack lane, for boys, girls and infants, which will be capable of holding about 600 children. The Star Theatre of Varieties is in Bishop street.

The Exchange Hall, which includes several private business offices and the Stockton Club House, was erected in 1873-4 by a limited company: the entrance is from the High street, the hall being approached by a spacious covered vestibule, there being also entrances from West row and Victoria passage: the hall is nearly square in form, with a domed roof of ingenious construction, without columns to support the same to obstruct the view from any seat, although the span is very considerable: a large permanent platform and orchestra are arranged for choral performances, and there are galleries on three sides: there are seats for 15,000 people, with standing room for many more; corridors run around the hall on every side, with many doors opening into the same, to give easy means of egress; cloak rooms and retiring rooms for performers also open out of the corridors. The architects for the work were Messrs. Alexander and Henman, of Stockton and Middlesbrough; and Mr. John F. Craggs, of Stockton, was contractor.

The Stockton Hospital stands on about $2\frac{1}{2}$ acres in Bowesfield lane, bordering on the south-west suburb of the town; it is built of red brick with local stone dressing on the modified pavilion system: the architecture
