Pages 320 and 321 of this publication show us some of the individuals, businesses, and services based in Tanfield, Tantobie, Whiteley Head, Beamish, Causey Row, and Shield Row in the year 1879.
TANFIELD is a parochial chapelry, and consists of the hamlets of WHITELEY HEAD, BEAMISH, TANTOBIE, STANLEY and SHIELD ROW. The village is situated 8 miles south-west from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 7 north-west from Chester-le-Street and 12 north-west from Durham : it is a polling place for the Northern division of the county, in Chester-le-Street civil and Lanchester parishes, middle division of Chester ward, Lanchester union, Shotley Bridge county court district, rural deanery of Chester, archdeaconry and diocese of Durham. BURNOPIIELD and LINTZ GREEN, formerly parts of this parish, now form an ecclesiastical district. The river Team runs through the chapelry, and the North Eastern Railway Company conveys coals from several pits to the river Tyne and Jarrow docks for exportation : the nearest station is Lintz Green, 2$\frac{1}{2}$ miles distant. The church or chapel of St. Margaret is a stone building, rebuilt and enlarged in 1749, the chancel of the old chapel still remaining : the tower was rebuilt in 1853, at the expense of John Eden, esq. of Beamish Hall : the church consists of chancel, nave, aisles and square embattled tower, containing 2 bells, clock and sundial : it has a good organ and tablets to the Davison, Eden and Ripon families ; there are seats for 700 persons. The register dates from the year 1719. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £222, with handsome residence, in the gift of the Earl of Ravensworth and held by the Rev. Thomas Hewan Archdall, M.A. Trinity College, Dublin. The National school at Shield Row was erected in 1848, and contains 140 boys and girls. There is a Grammar school, partly endowed. Small charities, amounting to about £15, are distributed by the vicar and churchwardens to the poor of the parish. There are eleven collieries within this parish ; also coke ovens, stone quarries and brick and tile works. The Tanfield coals have a high reputation. Fairs are held on the 2nd of November and 12th of May for hiring servants. John Eden, esq. of Beamish Hall, is lord of the manor. The Earl of Ravensworth and the Marquis of Bute are the chief landowners ; there are several smaller proprietors. The soil is clayey ; subsoil, gravel and stone. The crops are of the usual kind. The acreage is 6,310 ; rateable value, £33,682 ; and the population in 1871 was 7,283, including the ecclesiastical parish of Burnopfield, which is given under a separate heading.
Tantobie is a small village in the parish of Tanfield, 1 mile south-west and 9 miles south-west from Newcastle : it contains a chapel for Wesleyans, a colliery and coke ovens. The Marquis of Bute is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil and subsoil are clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and pasture.
Whiteley Head is a small village 1$\frac{1}{4}$ miles south-west. Here is an extensive grease manufactory ; George Parkinson, of Sherburn, is the owner. The Primitive Methodists have a chapel here.
Beamish is 2$\frac{1}{2}$ miles east from the village of Tanfield. Beamish Hall, the seat of John Eden, esq. D.L. is 2 miles east-by-south from the village.
Causey Row, 1$\frac{1}{2}$ miles east, has a Wesleyan chapel.
Shield Row is 1$\frac{1}{2}$ miles south, and STANLEY is a small village adjoining it. There are chapels for Primitive and Wesleyan Methodists at Shield Row, also a Catholic chapel, erected in 1872. A handsome National school was erected at Stanley in 1867 ; services are regularly held in the school room on Sunday, conducted by the Rev. John Crennell, curate.
