WESTGATE is a village and ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1867 from Stanhope parish, mainly in the Park quarter, but partly in the Forest quarter, on the river Wear, 2 miles east from St. John’s, Weardale, and 6 west from Stanhope station, in the Southern division of the county, Weardale union, Wolsingham county court district, northern division of Darlington rural deanery, and Durham archdeaconry and diocese. The church of St. Andrew is of stone, in the Early English style, and was built in 1869 from the designs of J. Withers, esq. of London: it consists of chancel, nave and porch, with tower, spire and 1 bell. The register dates from the year 1869. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300 with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Durham and held by the Rev. James Scholefield. The Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists have each a chapel here. The Ecclesiastical Commissioners are lords of the manor and principal landowners: Messrs. John Bell, George Emerson and William Muschamp, whose family have been settled in Durham from the time of William the Conqueror, are also considerable landowners. The soil is sand and loam; subsoil, limestone. The land is mostly pasture and meadow land. The area is 5,980 acres, and the population in 1871 was 1,265.

Parish Clerk, Joseph Parker.
