FELLING is an extensive village and ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1866 from the mother parish of Heworth, about 1 1/2 miles south-east from Gateshead, and has a station on the Newcastle and Darlington railway, is in the Northern division of the county, Gateshead union, Gateshead county court district, Chester rural deanery, eastern division, in the officialty of the Dean and Chapter of Durham, and in the diocese of Durham. Christ church was erected in 1866 ; it is a handsome stone building in the Decorated Gothic style, consisting of nave, south aisle and apse-chancel, the windows of which are stained ; it contains an organ and will seat about 450 persons. The register dates from the year 1866. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £300, in the gift of five trustees, and held by the Rev. Edward Haythornthwaite, St. John's Divinity College, Highbury. There are Congregational, Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist, New Connexion and United Free Church chapels here. A Catholic church is being erected. The area is 374 acres ; the population in 1871 was 6,265.
Felling Shore is situated on the Tyne side, about half a mile from the church, where the extensive chemical works of Hugh Lee Pattinson & Co. are situated, covering an area of 30 acres. Here are Board schools for boys, girls, and infants, where about 600 children are educated.
