TOW LAW is an ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1878 from the parish of Thornley, and is a small market town, in the union of Weardale, Wolsingham county court district, situated 3 miles north-east from Wolsingham and 10 north-west from Bishop Auckland; the Derwent extension of the Stockton and Darlington railway has a station here. The town is governed by a Local Board of Health, is lighted with gas and has a market, held every Friday. The church of SS. Philip and James is a stone building in the Early English style, large enough to seat nearly 400 people, and consists of chancel and nave; it was erected by subscription, the Weardale Company contributing upwards of £1,100. The living is a vicarage, worth £300 yearly, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Chester and held by the Rev. Michael Henry Simpson, B.A. of St. Catharine's College, Cambridge. The National schools were built in 1849, at a cost of £1,000, on a site given by the Weardale Iron Company, who have very extensive works here, to which is attributable the great increase of the population. There is a Mechanics' Institution, founded in 1857 by persons connected with the iron works. The Wesleyans, Primitive Methodists, United Presbyterians and Catholics have chapels here. The acreage is 467A. 3R. 13P.; the population of the ecclesiastical parish in 1871 was 4,968.

Helme Park is a hamlet, consisting of five farms, principally belonging to the Rev. G. P. Williamson, of Harperley Park.
